If you fancy travelling a little further afield for your Christmas shopping, the Cologne Christmas markets are well worth the trip. The markets run from the 23rd of November to 23rd of December, giving you plenty of time to discover this festive city.

The most magical market

For sheer Christmas magic, head to The House Elves’ Winter Fairytale Christmas Market (Heinzels Wintermärchen).

Located in the heart of Cologne's old town and spread over the Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares, the market features a wide range of festive stalls selling gifts and food and drink. The spectacular ice-skating rink on the Heumarkt is a special highlight.

The most scenic market

Located in Rudolfplatz, the Nicholas’ Village Christmas Market is one of our favourite Cologne Christmas markets.

This winter wonderland is perfectly designed for the family. Children will love the half-timber houses, life-sized crib and candy floss sellers. There's also the backdrop of Hahnen gate - a 13th-century gate that used to be part of the city walls in medieval times.

Be sure to explore the Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom), located right in the shadow of the magnificent Cologne Cathedral.

It’s an amazing opportunity to marvel at the beauty of the city's most famous cathedral, have a wander around the stalls and enjoy a bit of history.

The most local market

If you'd rather avoid the markets popular with tourists, the Stadtgarten Christmas market is a nice change of pace.

Located under the trees of a city park and with easy access via the U-Bahn, this Cologne Christmas market caters more to the locals. It's a great place to shop for handmade souvenirs, with 80 weekly changing exhibitors showcasing a range of art, clothing, jewellery and more.
