With over 1.5 million visitors annually, the Aachen Christmas market is one of the most enduringly popular and authentic in Germany, and the perfect place for a festive mini break. Festive fun for all the family

Nothing says Christmas quite like a wintery carousel – luckily, the Aachen Christmas market has got four scattered around the city. Take a moment to enjoy a sip of Eierpunsch while the kids are busy riding horses or pretending to be firefighters.

Winter warmers

Festive shopping is hungry work. Luckily, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the Aachen Christmas market, with local drinks, snacks and sweet treats to enjoy. There’s glühwein (mulled wine) stalls galore, or beer, liqueurs or hot chocolate, if you fancy.

A festive treat (or two)

Hungry? You’ll be spoilt for choice. As well as your classic Christmas market fare, Aachen boasts countless festive specialties – try a traditional pain d’épices, reibekuchen (fried potato pancake), chestnut soufflé, Dominosteine (think almond Jaffa cakes), fruit cake and jelly, gingerbread Spekulatius, and much more.

Christmas shopping in style

Once you’re fed and watered, while away the hours wandering through the Aachen Christmas market’s countless stalls. The Aachen Christmas market is also home to a huge number of shops and department stores, so you can really shop ‘til you drop.

Take a look in the surrounding streets and you’ll find all kinds of speciality stores, including teas, oils and local produce. You’re sure to find the perfect Christmas present.

Some of the stalls on offer:

  • Artisan leather goods, ceramics, or traditional wooden decorations and toys
  • Handmade crystal jewellery
  • Woollen scarves, hats and mittens
  • Candles and cosy lights
  • Handmade soap and soap dishes
  • Unusual decorations: snow globe, music boxes or even cuckoo clocks.
  • Traditional German Christmas treats – think Printen (spiced cookies), mustard, ham, and meringues
