• Yoom Dim Sum

    20 rue des Martyrs, 75009

Dim Sum in Paris can be a disappointingly limp and stodgy affair. Not so at this funky reinterpretation of the traditional Chinese tearoom – opened by two French friends following a stint in Hong Kong.

The freshly made steamed buns are firm and fragrant, with top marks going to a sweet version filled with lemon curd and Cointreau.

  • Mesdemoiselles Madeleine

    37 rue des Martyrs, 75009

The humble madeleine gets an update at this stylish bakery.

Buy them sweet or savoury, garnished with a shell and fondant centre, topped with a creamy fluorescent dome, or in an elaborately decorated allée of four for a special occasion. The big question is what would Monsieur Proust have made of these pimped-up beauties?

  • Les Grands D’Espagne

    36 rue des Martyrs, 75009

On one side of the shop, there’s a portrait: King Felipe of Spain.

Spot-lit on the other, three magnificent beasts hang in custom-made niches: pasta negra, the king of hams. Ask the Spanish-speaking staff to cut same ultra-delicate slices paleta – style, or nab one of the succulent gift boxes for that special carnivore in your life.

  • La Chambre aux Confitures

    9 rue des Martyrs, 75009

The secret to Lise Bienaimé’s divine jams (available in 70 varieties)? Maximum fruit and minimum sugar content in every pretty jar.

Her seasonal recipes – including savoury ones to pair with cheese and exotic flavours like kumquat – were inspired by her great-grandfather’s conserves. Customized pots make for a nifty, tasty gift.

  • Glazed

    54 rue des Martyrs, 75009

Bohemian Raspberry, Pussy Griottes, Black Sugar Sex Magic, Retox … even the names of Henri Guittet’s rock n’ roll ice creams and sorbets (2.50€ a scoop) are anything but forgettable.

Bored of the eternal strawberry and vanilla, he champions daring flavours and unexpected combinations, all made using high-quality handpicked produce.

  • Autour du Saumon

    56 rue des Martyrs, 75009

The quickest way to get your omega-3 fix?

This fishmonger-with-a-difference, where you can pick from seven sumptuous and rare varieties of salmon – including a rather astonishing one from Iceland - as well as assorted deli delights. Handily they also deliver and cater for parties if you’re feeling a bit kitchen shy.
