Eurostar trains arrive right in the heart of the city at Lille Europe station, just a 10-minute walk from the centre of town.
The station is right next door to the Euralille commercial centre if you fancy a bit of shopping and, don’t forget your Eurostar ticket gives you 2 for 1 entry to Lille’s top museums and galleries, if you feel like a bit of culture.
With Belgium just 20km away, its influence on Lille is hard to miss, with cheerful pavement cafés serving moules frites and waffles in the shade of step-gabled façades.
With its enormous annual flea market and great choice of shops, Lille is a shopaholic’s heaven. For the more bookish, head to Le Furet du Nord, one of Europe's biggest book shops.
Lillois specialties include the bright orange Mimolette cheese, also known as Boule de Lille, chewy babelutte de Lille caramels, and of course waffles, which are sold everywhere.
The Palais des Beaux-Arts has paintings by Dutch masters like Rubens and Van Dyck, and is second only to the Louvre for the number of works on show, so give yourself lots of time.
