Fall in love with Lille
With Belgium just 20km away, its influence on Lille is hard to miss, with cheerful pavement cafés serving moules frites and waffles in the shade of step-gabled façades.
With its enormous annual flea market and great choice of shops, Lille is a shopaholic’s heaven. For the more bookish, head to Le Furet du Nord, one of Europe's biggest book shops.
A feast of Flanders
Lillois specialties include the bright orange Mimolette cheese, also known as Boule de Lille, chewy babelutte de Lille caramels, and of course waffles, which are sold everywhere.
Move over, Louvre
The Palais des Beaux-Arts has paintings by Dutch masters like Rubens and Van Dyck, and is second only to the Louvre for the number of works on show, so give yourself lots of time.
