London’s taco boom is in full swing with a wave of new taquerias flinging their doors open across town. Brace yourself for queues (only Corazon, out of our selection, takes reservations), serious spice and one too many margaritas.

Top addresses for tacos

  • Breddos

    82 Goswell Road, EC1V 7DB

From humble beginnings (a shack in a Hackney carpark), Breddos has turned street food into an art form.

Tuck into perfect corn tortillas adorned with bold fusion toppings: rib-eye beef, Kung Pao pork belly with Sichuan spices or smoked sweet potato with pumpkin seeds.

Order: Baja fish with cabbage, lime mayo and pico de gallo.

  • Corazón

    29 Poland Street, W1F 8QR

This Soho taqueria packs a punch with its effortless hipster styling and flavour-packed food.

Bag a space at the sleek terrazzo bar to devour piquant short ribs, tuna tostadas and imaginatively topped tortillas, washed down with potent house margaritas.

Order: Achiote-marinated chicken tacos with bacon and spicy ranch dressing.

  • El Pastór

    6-7A Stoney Street, SE1 9AA

Fiesta vibes abound at this buzzy taqueria tucked under a railway arch opposite Borough Market.

Fluffy, authentic corn tortillas are made on site daily and topped with smoky grilled stone bass, garlicky prawns or short rib with pineapple salsa.

Order: The signature ‘El Pastor’ 24-hour marinated pork shoulder taco.

  • Taqueria

    141-145 Westbourne Grove, W11 2RS

Something of an old pro in the taco stakes, Taqueria initiated the trend way back in 2005 and has been dishing up tortillas from its lengthy menu ever since.

Options include jalapeño and goat’s cheese, soft-shell crab and slow roasted pork belly, and if you want your tacos served “naked”, with leaves instead of tortillas, you only have to ask (this is Notting Hill after all).

Order: Rib-eye steak huarache with refried beans, pico de gallo and salsa.

  • Bad Sports

    184 Hackney Road, E2 7QL

Above the bar of the same name is this hip taco joint serving a simple menu of five spot-on tacos plus sides and snacks.

Start with a signature slushie margarita, load up on bavette steak or spiced sea bream tacos, then head downstairs to continue the fiesta on cocktails with a testosterone twist, such as their Buckfast-supplemented negroni.

Order: King oyster mushroom tacos with beetroot mole.
