Eco-activism at Café de Ceuvel

Five ethical addresses in Amsterdam

Amsterdam isn’t backwards in being forward. This hotbed of liberal thinkers, tech wizards and social experimenters has fast adopted innovations in sustainability and an Earth-kind attitude.

Kickstart a greener getaway with a conscious-soothing train journey. We’ve sourced five ethical addresses for a stylishly Fairtrade, deliciously vegan and totally woke city break.

Eco-friendly addresses in Amsterdam

  • Café de Ceuvel

    4 Korte Papaverweg, 1032
Boost your green credentials in this sustainable creative space. A former shipyard, it’s been upcycled, fitted with solar panels, an aquaponic greenhouse and soil-cleaning systems. Visit for arts and crafts, spiritual ecology talks and eco-activism, or a quick mindfulness jab. Or, simply eat bitterballen made with coffee-ground-grown mushrooms, My City Garden greens and matcha lattes.
  • Studio Jux

    252 Ceintuurbaan, 1072
After mistakenly dyeing herself purple, Jitske Lundgren (and co-founder Carlien Helmink) decided fashion should be a fun affair. Their shop Studio Jux (‘having fun’ in German) sells sustainable minimalist looks, vegan skincare and guilt-free gifts. And you can get to know their Nepali tailors, too –look on your garment’s label for a code that will take you straight to their online profile.
  • Meatless District

    65–67 Bilderdijkstraat, 1053
Amsterdam’s vegan-leaning lot partially crowdfunded Meatless District (a cheeky riff on NYC’s Meatpacking District). Since then it’s likely converted some carnivores with faux chicken or cheeseburgers, Barbacoa bowls, homemade pastas and healthy sweets –all organic and wholly animal-free. Pair with vegan wines and beers, orvisit on the weekend for a cruelty-free brekkie.
  • Geiten Wollen Winkel

    37 Utrechtsestraat, 1017
‘Green, fair, vegan’ is this fast-fashion-fighting brand’s motto. Wearables include People Tree’s organic-cotton separates, Armedangelstree-pulp tops and By Mölle’s scarves knitted from recycled denim. Neither ethics nor style are compromised here, whether you want hip-hugging pants, a tailored parka or faux-leather tote. Plus they have shoes with the lightest of footprints.
  • Hempstory

    142 Oudezijds Achterburgwal, 1012
This innovative space aims to show off hemp’s lean, green versatility. The eco-friendly fibre has been worked into strokably soft separates, lotions and potions, furnishings, jewellery, artworks, insect-repellent... The bright-white, light-flooded space they’re showcased in is a tranquil spot to stay awhile. Stop in the on-site café for plant-based teas, smoothies and cakes.
