- Direct services operate from 9 July until 10 September 2005
Eurostar's special summer express, its Avignon direct service, will operate from Saturday 9 July and will run through until Saturday 10 September 2005. Bookings can be made before Christmas with sales opening today - so its time to shake off those winter blues and start planning for the perfect summer holiday in Provence.
Eurostar is launching the opening by offering a special return fare of £99 - available on more than 10% of the Avignon seats. Once these are sold the standard class return fare will be from £109 return.
It will be the fourth summer season Eurostar has operated a weekly direct service from London/Ashford through to Avignon. The direct services operate weekly during the summer when there is particularly high demand. However, all year round, travellers are able to use Eurostar Connections - travelling by Eurostar and then interchanging in Lille or Paris onto TGV trains for easy journeys to Avignon.
Similarly other major French destinations have easy high-speed rail access and there is a growing awareness in the UK market on the ease, speed and cost effectiveness of travelling by rail versus flying. Journeys are productive - you can watch the countryside go by, eat, drink, sleep, play games, read guidebooks or practice French.
Avignon Centre Station is literally a 2 minutes' stroll to the ancient walls and then it's straight into the heart of this fabulous medieval City. Nestled by the side of the Rhone, Avignon, with its famous ruined bridge and Palace of the Popes has attracted many visitors over the centuries. Indeed, the Provence region offers a wide diversity of beautiful countryside, lush vineyards and an abundance of historical sites, museums and galleries.
The opening of the first section of UK high speed line in the autumn last year, has enhanced the journey times with the out-bound journey taking just over 6hrs 10mins and the in-bound journey 6hrs. (Detailed timings below).
To indulge fully in the complete Eurostar experience, travel first class from just £229 return and enjoy the roomier accommodation, meals and drinks served at seat and plenty of pampering by the on-board crew.
On www.eurostar.com travel on Eurostar can be combined with hotel accommodation, car hire and travel insurance.
