There are many clichés about Paris but you only have to visit once to realise that there is something utterly bewitching about the French capital.

Not known as the “City of Love” for nothing, romance is indeed everywhere – on the bridges of the Seine, on the steps of the Sacre-Cœur at sunset and in sunny street cafes, so watch out, you might just find yourself falling in love with Paris itself.

If sightseeing is top of your agenda you should start with Paris’s most famous landmark of all, the elegant Eiffel Tower. Views from the top are spectacular, with the whole city laid out before you.

For a dose of culture, hit the Louvre Museum with its futuristic glass pyramid in the central courtyard. Then, head over to the Musee d’Orsay, housed in a former train station, the stunning building itself is worth a visit (and you can get 2 for 1 entry with your Eurostar ticket).

Now your cultural appetite is appeased are you ready to hit the shops in Paris? For a glimpse of the world of the Paris fashionista check out the Galeries Lafayette, or just wander down the ultra-chic Rue St Honoré.

When you’re all shopped out stroll over to the Latin Quarter to see the grand old university buildings of the Sorbonne and browse the art galleries, cafes and restaurants of Boulevard Saint Germain.  Just across the bridge you’ll see the flying buttresses of Notre Dame and its host of gurning gargoyles.

While you’re wandering along the river Seine, stop off at the Pont des Arts, the wooden bridge by the Louvre. By day there are hoards of tourists, but at sunset the Parisians come out. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sunset over the river as you nibble on your baguette with ham and cheese, washed down with a good bottle of wine.

If you're looking for family things to do in Paris, you can’t beat Disneyland Paris for entertainment value. For those interested in history, the Château de Versailles, with its beautiful gardens and fountains and Marie Antoinette’s private hamlet is a great day trip.
