La Monnaie and Sainte-Catherine

The Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Géry neighbourhoods form the historic heart of the city. The bustling streets around the church of Sainte-Catherine still retain the characteristic atmosphere of the area's former fish docks.A whole host of restaurants draw fish and seafood lovers.Place de la Monnaie was home to the mint which produced ducats and other coins for the Duchy of Brabant in the 15th century.Théâtre royal de la Monnaie, now a venue for internationally renowned concerts, ballets and operas, was the starting point of the 1830 revolution.This pedestrianised zone, where a number of shopping streets meet, is a particularly pleasant place to stop and rest around the fountains when the summer heat becomes overwhelming.
