Shaped by the Phoenicians and then by the Greeks, Agde is known as the "black pearl of the Mediterranean", for its black volcanic rock. The cliffs of the Cap d'Agde are to be found at the watery crossroads of the Herault river, the Canal du Midi and the Mediterranean. Agde itself unfolds beside 14 kilometres of fine sandy beaches, pine trees and oleanders. A favourite desination for many, Agde is also well known for its nudist beaches.
You'll probably want to explore the Cap d'Agde area, the town of Agde itself, and the traditional fishing village of Grau d'Agde, and the Tamarissière nature park.
To get to know this relaxed land of sun and sea, the Museum of Ephebe will ensure you are well informed. This museum of marine archeology has a fascinating collection of antique bronzes and other deep-sea treasures. The museum takes its name from the Agde Ephebe, a symbol of the town's antique roots.
The Agatois Museum retraces the history of Agde, through 25 rooms dedicated to local artwork and popular traditions.
Off the Cap d'Agde, Fort Brescou is built on the submerged side of an ancient underwater volcano. It was redesigned according to Vauban's designs and was to serve as a prison during the French Revolution in the 18th century.
Go for a romantic walk along the charming Canal du Midi, or if you're with the family, take the kids to play in the park at the Château Laurens. There's plenty to keep you occupied here, including cycling, canoeing, fishing and golf in this green and pleasant setting. All that fresh sea air and exercise will no doubt give you a healthy appetite, and the restaurants in Agde will provide you with all sorts of Mediterranean delights. You'll find delicious aubergines, tomatoes, courgettes, olives and stuffed mussels on the menu, and dishes flavoured with garlic, parsley, thyme and bay leaves. To accompany your food try a Picpoul de Pinet or Becos Figos wine.
Sailing regattas are a tradition in this area and make a pleasing sight, white sails dotting the horizon. If you're here in June, don't miss the film festival "Les Hérault du Cinéma". For a fun day out with the family, Aqualand is the original and best known waterpark in Europe.
