Antibes

Antibes

Ideally situated between Nice and Cannes, Antibes is one of the most popular destinations on the French Riviera. The sun and nearby beach of Juan-les-Pins attract the high flyers of the Jet Set: its Cap-eden Roc Hotel is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

On your visit to Antibes, head straight for the verdant Saint Roch promontory, where you will find the Fort Carré, a stronghold used in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again, and which will offer you a spectacular view of the town and the azure blue of the yacht-speckled Mediterranean which almost surrounds you.

Antibes is not just a pretty face, however. There is cultural substance to be found here: Many artists fell in love with the play of light and the clear air in Antibes, resulting in a rich artistic bounty. First stop: Picasso Museum. This is one of the world's greatest collection's of Picasso's work, made up of the masterpieces he painted whilst staying in the Château Grimaldi in 1946. Fancy seeing Napoleon's hat in the flesh? Pop along to the Naval Museum of Napoleon, which has a collection of Napoleonic memorabilia.

For the real Provence, check out the Provençal Market, one of the best-known in the region, which takes place every morning on the Cours Massena.

Grab your swimmers and hit the beach: on the way you'll pass "billionaires bay", where the second (or third) houses of the rich and famous hide amongst the thick vegetation.

Summer nights in Antibes are hot, especially during the Jazz à Juan festival. This was the very first European Jazz festival to be set up, back in 1960, and the programme includes big stars as well as newcomers. In the past, artists such as Marcus Miller, Salif Keita, Diana Krall, and James Carter have performed here.

If you're in Antibes with the family, the kids are sure to love Marineland, one of the biggest marine zoos in the world, with sharks, killer whales, dolphins, and even a pair of polar bears.

The sea is key in Antibes, and sailing is the foremost activity here. If you're into boats, don't miss the spectacular regatta of vintage yachts, built before 1950, as they sail to music during the Voiles d'Antibes or "sails of Antibes" event in June. Enjoy the gentle sea breeze and the leisurely pace of life in Antibes.
