Tread lightly
In 2006 we commissioned some research which revealed that Eurostar journeys to our core destinations of Paris and Brussels emit a tenth of the carbon dioxide of flying. As you’d expect we were pretty pleased, but at the same time we realised there was still plenty more we could do.
Our first step was to launch Tread Lightly in April 2007; we made a commitment to cut our carbon dioxide emissions by 25% per traveller journey by 2012, which we’ve since raised to 35% having reached our initial target earlier than expected, and since 14 November 2007 all Eurostar journeys have been carbon neutral at no extra cost to our travellers. We’ve also made changes across the business, setting out a 10-point plan to reduce our overall impact on the environment, and appointing an Environment and Energy team and 40 formidable Tread Lightly champions throughout Eurostar to make sure we stick to them. What’s more we also work closely with various partners so we can keep up to date with the latest environmental and climate change thinking.
Our first commitment under Tread Lightly was a 25% cut in our carbon dioxide emissions per traveller journey by 2012. Find out how we’ve gone about it here.
Two years on and we’ve just released our first report into how we’re getting on with Tread Lightly. You can read it here.
When we launched Tread Lightly we set out an environmental plan with 10 objectives to make sure we become greener in everything we do. Find out what they are and how we’re getting on here.
All our journeys are carbon neutral at no extra cost to our travellers. To make this possible we work with selected partners whose projects deliver carbon reductions to offset the emissions that we’re unable to reduce ourselves. Find out how we do it and why, here.
