Ghent

Gravensteen castle
Chill out with a city break in the university city of Ghent.

Home to 250,000 people, quaint cobbled streets and winding canals, Ghent's glory days were the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, when the buoyant cloth trade made this city the "Manhattan of the Middle Ages".

Ghent is the perfect place to lose yourself. Follow the winding lanes past 900-plus listed buildings, then take a waterboat ride past the canalside gabled warehouses and along the two rivers which meet here - the Rivers Lys and Scheldt. After a day on your feet, relax with fruity Belgian beers in the canalside Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant.

  • To get a feel for the proud Ghent of medieval times, make your first stop the six-storey Belfort (Belfry), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built between 1313 and 1380
  • Feast your eyes on the Flanders International Film Festival, held in Ghent from 9-20 October. It presents more than 150 feature films and 90 shorts to over 100,000 spectators, concentrating on independent films, shorts and seminars.
  • See the precious art the medieval merchants commissioned, such as the Van Eyck brothers' Ghent Altarpiece Saint-Bavo Cathedral, one of the highlights of European art. Or fast-forward to the 21st century with a visit to the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (Museum of Contemporary Arts).
  • When night falls, head for the Koninklijke Opera (Royal Opera) or enjoy the nightlife in Sint-Pietersplein, the Overpoortstraat and canalside Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant, where you can sample over 100 Belgian beers. For pigging out, the Patershol area (the old Tanners' Quarter) is packed with cosy restaurants serving mussels in white wine, hearty stews and Belgian frites (chips).
