Tignes and Val d'Isère

Tignes & Val d'Isère

Tignes lies at the head of the Haute Tarentaise, a 40-minute drive up the valley from Bourg-St-Maurice, and is connected by lifts and pistes to Val d'Isère.

Character-free, snow-laden. If it’s adventure you’re after, Tignes is the place to be. Plenty of off-piste runs, lots of boarding and breathtaking descents making it a thrilling ski holiday.
If you want Alpine charm and après ski activities, go to Val D’Isere.

Val, as it’s affectionately known by its fans, is described as one of the best on- and off-piste mountain attractions and is well loved among the boarding community. High altitudes practically guarantee snow, but it also means this resort is best for expert or, at the very least, the confident skier. However, as the many schools also cater for mixed groups including beginners, it’s actually an aptitude melting pot.

Not to be missed
At the bottom of La Grande Motte glacier you’ll find the Tour de Pramecou, a favourite off-piste route for skiers of all abilities.

In Val D’Isère, no good skier or rider should miss a day-trip to Bonneval-sur-Arc.
Starting with a 20-minute hike from the top of Le Fornet, followed by a choice of sweeping powder descents… It’s a must.

One for the train
The funicular from Val-Claret takes seven minutes to get you to the top of La Grande Motte
with a capacity of over 3,000 passengers an hour.

Did you know the resort altitude for Val D’Isere is 1850m and that it has 90 lifts (6 cableways, 45 chairs, 35 drags)?

Off the piste
Le Panoramic at the foot of the glacier might be a little overpriced, but the spectacular views make it worth the expense. One of Tignes's gem.

For Tignes, L'Arbina, Le Panoramic, La Pignatta are all good lunch spots, and in Val, Claret,
Le Caveau is great for dinner as well as La Pizzeria and Myako.

For Val D’Isère, Le Signal, L'Edelweiss, La Fruitière and Bananas, are great for lunch
and Le Blizzard and L'Atelier d'Edmond are great for dinner.

Top money tip
The Snowspace pass lets you try out your snowboarding skills, with access to 20 lifts in
the southern part of the park, complete with jumps, a halfpipe and a freestyle zone,
all for €27.50 a day.

The Train Rouge, the resort's free bus service, runs with startling efficiency every few minutes during the day from one end of the resort to the other.

Best avoided
For Tignes, if you’re looking for woodland trails this bleak, treeless setting isn’t for you.
