Strategic Projects
ROLE: - I am the Network Planning Manager
DURATION: - I’ve been at Eurostar since 1994
LOCATION: - Times House, King's Cross
I work in a small but perfectly formed department called Strategic Projects. We are responsible, among other things, for the development of new rail-related projects that will improve the contribution to the business. As part of a two-person team we have a good working relationship, with control over methods and approaches to our tasks. I enjoy the sheer diversity of the job, from modification of the Common Bloc (an important part of the train) to replacement of CCTV systems at Ashford. Plus, as secretary of the Eurostar Design Authority I see many embryonic projects take shape. The nature of my work means that I meet many people from within the company and outside. I really like not knowing what I might be dealing with next year.
Before working at Eurostar I worked for 20 years with British Rail starting with the grandly titled “Shipping & International Services Division” - so there has always been a ‘continental’ link. I think Eurostar is an exciting and unique company to work for. There is a fairly relaxed atmosphere here that doesn’t detract from the important work that needs to be done: in fact, I think it helps to meet the targets. I enjoy the cultural mix – the French, Belgian, and Dutch all make it a more interesting place to work. The train is a superb piece of engineering and a credit to all those who work on it, in it and for it.
