Discover an oasis of calm, right in the heart of London: the Chelsea Physic Garden is a centre of education, beauty and relaxation. The “Secret Garden” was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, and it continues to research the properties, origins and conservation of over 5000 species. The location was chosen as the proximity to the river created a warmer microclimate allowing the survival of many non-native plants - such as the largest outdoor fruiting olive tree in Britain.
Tate Britain, the home of British art from 1500 to the present day, is located on the north bank of the River Thames at Millbank, south west of the city centre and not far from the Houses of Parliament. It is the world centre for the understanding and enjoyment of British art and works actively to promote interest in British art internationally. Tate Britain’s younger relative in London is the Tate Modern, located on the south bank near Blackfriars Bridge, opposite
St Paul's Cathedral and next to the Globe Theatre. Created in the year 2000 from a disused power station in the heart of London, Tate Modern displays a permanent collection of international modern art, as well as regular temporary exhibitions by world renowned artists. The two Tates are conveniently connected by the Tate Boat which runs every forty minutes during gallery opening hours, and also stops at the London Eye.
The Sir John Soane's Museum, which has been described as the most ingenious domestic architecture in Britain, is an amazing London treasure-house. Left to the nation by the architect Sir John Soane in 1837, the house is full of architectural illusions and surprises which showcase Soane's vast collection of antiquities and art. There is a special candlelit opening on the first Tuesday evening of each month, 6-9pm.
