Theatre and musicals in London

Whether you’re a fan of Fosse or a sucker for Shakespearean sonnets, London’s range of theatre and musical attractions will satisfy even the most discerning of dramatic palates.
For glossy production values and the chance to see Hollywood stars slumming it on the lowly boards, look no further than London’s West End. The area around Picadilly Circus offers all you need ever know about the glory of musicals in London. Stand beneath the statue of Anteros (often wrongly referred to as Eros, fact fans) and you can almost smell the greasy stage paint and catty ambition.
Look around nearby and, unless theatregoers’ tastes have undergone a sudden dramatic change (pardon the pun), you’re likely to find productions of such long running musical hits as Les Misérables, Chicago, The Lion King and We Will Rock You.
On the other (jazz) hand if you prefer your theatre without the musical element you’ll find plenty of plays throughout London to make you laugh, cry or just stroke your chin in quiet contemplation. The Almeida in Islington and Waterloo’s Old Vic are just a couple of the best theatres in London, both offering weighty productions and impressive casting coups.
Alternatively step off the beaten track at the King’s Head Theatre on Islington’s Upper Street. This tiny space at the back of a charmingly scruffy boozer has had more than its fair share of thespian talent pass through its doors. Head along and you might be lucky enough to see the next Kenneth Branagh or Hugh Grant in action.
