Easter in London

Swap flying bells for bouncing bunnies and spend the Easter weekend in London. Chocolate lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and shopaholics will all be in heaven.

Kids in tow?
London at Easter time is a kids’ paradise. There are numerous museums, parks and districts who organise Easter egg hunts and face-painting (make up your little ones to resemble chicks and you’ll get all clucky). If the kids behave themselves - don’t smear themselves or passers-by with chocolate - you could reward them with a trip to Hamleys, the giant toy store on Regent’s Street.

Chocoholics, this way
Are you having craving for the sweet brown stuff? At Easter time, London’s many chocolate shops compete for the most creative and enticing displays. The smell is simply hypnotic. Start looking out for Easter collections as early as the beginning of March… and indulge without moderation. Try the organic confectionary at Montezuma (51 Brushfield Street) or pay a visit to the divine Hotel Chocolat (various locations around the city), so called - possibly - because true chocolate lovers will be tempted to spend the night devouring the beautifully crafted collection.

Shopping eggstravaganza
There’s always an excuse for a spot of shopping in London. The department stores make a special effort with their window displays around this time of year, full of the joys of spring and bursting with colour. Don’t miss Selfridges, on Oxford Street, for their artistic dressings. Every year, Harrods transforms into an egg factory – buy a dozen and then get them painted by an artist while you’re there. And if you needed another excuse to shop, the mid-season sale often falls around Easter with at least 10 per cent discounts at many stores.

Fresh and wild
Make the most of the mild Easter weather (as long as the April showers hold off) and discover the city’s green spaces. Spring is in the air and you’ll see flowers blooming in Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath and Kensington Gardens.

Gourmets and gluttons
Your trip wouldn’t be complete without a truly British meal at a gastropub. Forget your prejudices about the old British boozer, this institution has had a makeover in recent years and these days it’s a good place to find true gourmets enjoying some seriously good food. We can’t vouch for every establishment claiming to be a gastropub, but - in general - they’re a whole world away from their predecessors. Choose Sunday roast – either lamb with mint sauce or beef served with Yorkshire pudding for the crispy roast potatoes and steamed veg. All washed down with a pint of ale. Cheers!

Love is in the air…
Take your loved one for a stroll through Primrose Hill in bloom or watch the sun set over South Bank before dining in Oxo tower or Skylon. Easter in London offers plenty of opportunities for romance – just be creative…
